The Little Border Collie That Could

couldn't anymore.

RIP Red Dog, known to his closest friends as Briggs.

January 29th 1997 to January 12th 2008.

"Death ends a life, not a relationship."

I was blessed to know him, and honoured to have him as a companion, and will miss him every day for the rest of my life.

May you all have a friend as honest as Briggs. Thank you for everything.

Oh RDM, I am so sorry. In honor of my Zoe, Maddie and Antryg....for RD

SEPARATE LIFETIMES

We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached.

Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.

We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan....

I am so sorry honey. Reading this has made me just as sad as the day I lost Cookie.

His life and the way you honor it have touched many, many people and animals.

He was an inspiring creature and a wonderful way to honor his breed.

Rest well, gentle Briggs, you lived a hearty life and left behind your pawprints in your Mom's heart forever.

Go find Ms. Cookie at the bridge, she's got nice solid shoulders to carry you across.

We all were blessed to know Briggs through you. What a very special dog.

Words cannot express how sorry I am for this tremendous loss.

I'm thinking of one of my favorite photos of him, one you posted elsewhere long ago: he is swimming toward you with a ball in his mouth and a look of determination born of devotion on his face.

Take good care of yourself and know that many of us will be missing him. You honored him through how well you cared for him and how much you loved him, but also through how you shared him with all of us.

S, my heart aches...my back too...sympathetic pain, I reckon. Dee Doo is sitting still in the window sill, and Pansy and Sweet Pea are quiet now -- (it's their dinner time now) -- all in deference to passage of the GREAT SPIRIT that Briggs was and will always be.

You cared for him throughout his life, knew and loved him as no one else could or ever did, and preserved his dignity intact when his time came.

I am so glad you had the respite, from his first attack, to make your peace with him. That was his last gift to you, among so many that he gave throughout his magnificent life to you, your rescued pups, his brothers and sisters, Tweed, Piper, Woo, Toilet Kitty, Kimber and Angry Donut...and to Borderluver, Uncle Cookie and all your RL friends and your friends and admirers, weeping into their computer screens tonight, for their love and admiration of you and that beautiful, awe-inspiring Red Dog, Briggs.

My heart and love are with you tonight and always.

Love,

I am very sorry for your loss, RD, aka Briggs, was very strong. I guess you get to be strong now.
Here's something that I like during these hard times, I hope it gives you some comfort.

Do not stand by my grave and grieve.
I am not there, I did not leave.
For I’m that distant shining star.
I’m all around you, never far.

I am the sparkle in children’s eyes.
I paint the blue in the autumn skies.
And in those cool sweet summer eves,
I hide in the shadows the sunshine weaves.

Yes together we laughed and cried,
But now I'm ever at your side.
For as long as I am in your heart,
We'll never really be apart.

So live your life and do be gay,
And look forward to that day,
When somewhere just around the bend,
We will surely meet again.

"FOUR FEET"

I have done mostly what men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can't forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through--
Wherever my road inclined--
Four-Feet said, 'I am coming with you!'
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round--
Which I shall never find--
Some where that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind.

--- Rudyard Kipling ---

With deepest sympathies.

Ive been reading your blog for awhile, although I have never met you or Red Dog. This news has made my heart sink and Im crying as I write this. It is truly amazing how he touched so many people's hearts, and I know the person hurting the most is you. You have honored him in life and in his death. I am sure he is playing with my Belle in heaven now, chasing a ball in on an endless beach with sound hips, elbows, and hearts.

I'm so sorry for your loss... I've looked at your blog a couple of times in the past few days-- I guess I keep expecting it not to be true. RD was just such a beautiful dog with such a great attitude that it's hard to imagine a world-- real or online!-- without him. Big hugs to you and your critters!

Sheena~

Nothing I can say can compare with what has already been said about Briggs and his wonderful life with you.

You have my deepest sympathies, I know how hard it is to lose your heart dog. Nothing will ever be the same, none of your relationships will ever be as fulfilling as they were when Briggs was around. But you learn to make do and to remember the wonderful times that you have together. And somehow that makes everything right eventually. I'll drink a beer for him tonight.

Numbness is a good thing, as is being busy. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask.

Sorry to be so late in posting these condolences.
I've never met you, I stumbled upon your blog quite by accident, and enjoy it immensely.
I can honestly say I've never seen such an expressive face as RD had. He just looked so incredibly kind, honest, tolerant, and devoted. The thing is, after the time I've spent reading your blog; all of those attributes can also be said about you.
Truly wonderful traits for you both to possess.
Please take some measure of comfort in the knowledge that you gave him so much more than any "pet owner" would have - you gave him the true companionship of a loving partner. He couldn't have had anything more, and you couldn't have done anything more for him.
Take care,
Wendy

Our hearts go out to you. We'll miss RD's spirit and spunk, even though we never met him. I hope he's roaming peacefully in that big ol' green pasture in the sky.

Hello Food Lady
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been checking your blog since about mid-week, wondering if you've begun getting over your terrible loss, and are well enough to start posting again. Your many fans out here in cyberspace care about you as much as we did about RD, so please post a one-liner to let us know how you're doing.

We know it will be a long time before the pain even starts to fade. Please let us know if there is anything any one of us could do.

I have recently discovered your blog and have been reading it. When I got to this entry, I wept.

I rescued a "free to good home" German Shepherd in 1997. Casper had separation anxiety, was all kinds of aggressive, and had one of those challenging personalities - as in, he knew what the house rules were, but about once a week or so he'd try to see how far he could push me. He drove me crazy - and I loved him so much I still don't have words for it.

I lost him in 2006, to a combination of hip dysplasia (damn all GSD breeders who don't test the hips of their stock!) and complications from the acute liver failure back when he was 2. He got 6 more years than anyone expected, and he went to sleep with my hands on his head and my voice in his ear.

RIP, handsome Briggs, my goofy Casper, and all of our beloved dogs everywhere.
